Arthritis Life

    Life insurance with gout

Gout has a reputation problem, but not much of an insurance problem. If your gout is managed, whether through medication like allopurinol or through diet and lifestyle, cover is usually very achievable, often at or near standard rates. The trick is answering the right questions well.

    What insurers actually care about

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis, caused by urate crystals forming in a joint rather than by an immune condition attacking it, so insurers assess it on its own terms. They aren't interested in the old jokes. They want to know how often you get attacks, whether you're on preventative medication, and whether the gout has affected your kidneys, because frequent or long-standing gout can be linked to kidney and heart considerations. One or two attacks a year, well managed, is a very different application from monthly flare-ups, and we make sure insurers see which one you are.

What insurers look at with gout

    • How often you have attacks, and when the last one was
    • Whether you take preventative medication such as allopurinol
    • Any kidney problems or kidney stones
    • Blood pressure and heart health, which insurers consider alongside gout
    • Your weight, alcohol intake and general lifestyle

    How it works

A quick, private health check online. A call with a friendly UK adviser. Then we approach the right insurers, handle the paperwork, and keep you updated. Straightforward cases can often proceed without a GP report.
